Nate’s Notes | Season 7 | Division 3 | Week 3

2012 Winter, SEASON 7
Week 3

Last week my fellow IBL’ers met Mr. Controversy Himself; Division 1’s very own Mike Criscione with the first edition of “Mike Mic’d”. So I felt it would only be right to reintroduce myself. i go by the name of Nate Apolonio aka D3 GM of the Year aka Mr. IBL Media himself, I’ve written for the IBL for the past 5 seasons, but somewhere along the lines, I got stuck doing “boring” game recaps. Earlier this week, I dove into the Division 2 frenzy and gave my insight on the division. Now its time for Division 3 to get some insight.

Lets start at the top with the defending champs the California Swag Bears, the Swag Bears opened the season much like the NBA Champions Dallas Mavericks did. Losing, in blowout fashion in the season opener. Last season this team seemed to be having fun while defeating opponents, now since they have the trophy I’m guessing their feeling bored, I don’t see this team repeating.

The emergence of the Prospectz has come to the chagrin of many of the leagues analyst who expected another rough season for the Prospectz. The team’s off-season pickup of Dylan Liebelt has proved to be a huge factor in the team’s 3-0 start.

Special Delivery is one of the newcomers  in the Division, they don’t seemed phased however. Shooting out the gates firing on all cylinders They sit at 3-0 after the first 3 game’s and are tied for the divisions best record with the Prospectz. This team could easily be 1-2, but a 2 point win in Week 2 and a 1 point win in Week 3, are a big reason this team is so high in the rankings. Special Delivery should cool down after the Super Bowl break.

Its Young Mula baby! Jason Trinh and his Young Money squad has climbed to the #3 spot in the standings with a 2-1 record  after 3 games played. I really didn’t expect this team to be a threat after the departure of Robel Kevorkian, but so far their proving me wrong. The team’s record should balance out when they start playing the élite teams in the Division. I assume teams are playing man to man on this team. Well let me tell you this, zone these guys up. They can’t shoot. If you want a win play a zone.

Justin’s, Justice League team is sitting at the #4 spot. The Justice League is actually my favorite team to watch play. They play as a team week in and week out. They’ve played together for years and it shows. The zone they run is the best in the division hands down, and I know its only Week 4 but I see this team being a very STRONG contender for the Season 7 Championship.

The Dirty Homies are another team I see being a strong contender for a Championship. Jesse Jimenez should easily win MVP of the Division. He is in my opinion the best player in the division. He can play defense, he can score with the best, but his best quality is his ability to distribute the rock. Through 3 weeks they’re 2-0 and in Week 3 they gave the “self-proclaimed CHAMPS” of the Division, Wonton Soup all they could handle.

The Filthy Elite is one of those teams, many other Division 3 teams don’t get to see because of their early scheduling. Let me tell you now, these “newcomers” are far from newcomers. Their weakness is rebounding but this team can score with the best of them, and should definitely be considered a threat in the division.

The California Raisins along with Wonton Soup are the two Division 2 teams that enjoyed success in Division 2 and would like to try their luck in the lower division. The Raisins came out steaming in Week 2 with a big win over Young Money, but were shocked by Special Delivery in Week 3. The same can be said about Wonton Soup. The team came out firing in Week 1, defeating the reigning champs by 12, however in Week 3 the Dirty Homies got the best of them, simply out playing Wonton. I’ll say this now, Wonton Soup was a major factor in Division 2 because of Aaron Sanchez and Jaime Villalobos. With Villalobos and Sanchez  the team was nearly unbeatable, without Villalobos and Sanchez this team is just another mediocre team jacking up three’s and picking up technical fouls, because in their minds they’re the best .

Next on the list would be The Monstars aka Tune Squad aka Space Jam, this team sits at 1-2 and I don’t think a name change will help them on this one. This team has trouble scoring the rock. In their first 2 games they averaged 41.5 ppg. In week 3 they scored 71 points but still came away with the loss. Theirs just something about this team that doesn’t have me sold on them.

Bromantic! The most inconsistent team in the Division. If this team could just play a full game the way they the first half, they would easily be 3-0 or 2-1. In their Week 1 game, the team looked really good in the first half. The second half has been a different story for this team, if they figure that out they should be fine for the remainder of the season.

The Bombers are a returning team but week after week they look like they don’t know what they’re doing. In order for this team to win, the opponents need to have a really terrible game, and I’m in no way exaggerating. Their Week 2 win was a 35-20 win. In their two losses, their opponents have averaged 64.5 ppg. so clearly defense is not this teams strong suit.

Three teams sit at the bottom of the division at 0-3 yet out of those 3 teams (Splash Gang, LEGITimate, and Team YOLO!) I see Splash Gang and LEGITimate turning their seasons around. Splash Gang has one of the better point guards in the division with Richard Pan, but after him the team lacks depth, and that goes for the two other teams as well. DJ Romasanta is the only player on the team averaging double figures. For Team YOLO, no player is averaging double figures. Darryial Morris leads the team in scoring with 8.3 ppg. Any team with a leading scorer scoring 8.3 ppg deserves to be at the bottom of the standings.

Nate’s Notes | Season 7 | Division 2 | Week 3

2012 Winter, SEASON 7
Week 3

Last week my fellow IBL’ers met Mr. Controversy Himself; Division 1’s very own Mike Criscione with the first edition of “Mike Mic’d”. So I felt it would only be right to reintroduce myself. i go by the name of Nate Apolonio aka D3 GM of the Year aka Mr. IBL Media himself, I’ve been writing for the IBL for the past 5 seasons, but somewhere along the lines, I got stuck doing “boring” game recaps.  So starting this week, I’m gonna dive into the Division 2 frenzy and give my insight on the division.

We are in the 7th season of IBL play, and in those 7 seasons only 2 teams have hoisted the  Division 2 championship trophy. With those teams being Wonton Soup and Double Dribble; there is Quiksilver who won the inaugural Division 2 championship in season 2 but they “Gold Ball” wasn’t instituted at the time, so they receive some spiffy t-shirts.

So with 3 weeks in the books in season 7 I can tell you what teams are on the right track and what teams playoff hopes have quickly derailed.

Contenders

Lets start with the reigning champions Double Dribble; the champs returned in Week 1 with the almost the exact roster that won the championship in Season 6 with the only addition being Daimon Fleming (3.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg) who hasn’t really panned out to what the team expected. The team lost one of their key pieces, from the championship team with the departure of Giovanni Valentine and his scoring will be missed.  One of the bright spots for the champs has been the play of Andrae Lockett, through the first 2 games Lockett is averaging (29.0 ppg, and 3.0 spg) Lockett is a perennial 3 point threat every time he’s on the floor so defender’s look out. The scoring behind Lockett is mostly comprised by a combination of the Pickett Brothers (Derrick and Diahnte) and Jesse Jimenez. The team sits atop the division with a 2-0 record, and all signs point to this team returning to the playoffs to defend their crown.

The team sitting in the #2 spot in the standings are the Division veterans Quiksilver, the addition of Jordan Block and Kyli Crooms has been HUGE for this team who thrives on the “inside-out” style of play. The play of those two players and the play the health of PG Brandon Kinard will be a huge factor in the success of the team. Quiksilver is one of those veteran teams that make small off-season acquisitions to stay in the thick of things when it comes to teams “contending” for a championship.

If someone were to tell me that the X-Men would be in the #3 spot after  3 weeks of play with a 2-0 record I wouldn’t believe you. I still don’t believe this team has what it takes to even make it to the post season. Their 2-0 record is a result of “luck scheduling” in Week 2 they played and beat the (0-3) 686 team and in Week 3 they beat an undermanned Fly Society team (0-2). Both the teams that they beat look poised to miss the post season, so I wouldn’t be celebrating too much if I was a member of the X-Men. The loss of the Smith trio (Darren, D’ante and Chris) who pretty much carried the team to and through the playoffs last season will be felt soon enough.

 Surprise Teams

Some of the surprise teams this season have been team Limitless who  have proven they can contend with the Divisions “élite” teams, starting this season with a 2-1 record entering Week 4. Another surprise has been UKnow after the departure of the teams leading scorer Jordan Block to Quiksilver, the team looked to be all but dead, but the addition on Buai Tut, Tray Caples and Tyrell Goldsberry has energized this team and quickly propelled them up the list of “surprise teams”.

Another Surprise team would be Reign, led by Wilson Fiallos this team could easily be 2-0 entering Week 4 but a 2 point loss to Quiksilver is Week 3 trashed all hopes of that happening. Reign is a veteran team that can make some noise all season long.

The Revenge has quickly become a serious contender as well. The addition of Darren and D’ante Smith as well as Brandon Jones the team has three offensive options and are 2-0 after 3 weeks of play.

Fly Society is known for starting their season with 0-2 and 0-3 records, and getting it together in the season. However if this team falls in Week 4 to UKnow a 0-3 start will hurt whatever chances they have at making the playoffs, their room for error is minimal so GM Desean Collins will have to get his troops in order. He’ll also have to learn to check the schedule so he knows when the game times has been changed.

 Pretenders

The List of Pretender teams in the Division include; last season’s runner-up the Secret Agents who claim to have made significant moves in the off-season to get back to the level they were at, but the injury to Lonnie Bradshaw will affect the team more than they think. His production cannot be duplicated.

Los Primos is also on the list of pretenders, although they sit a 2-0, this team has just not convinced me that they can compete at an Elite level.  In Week 1 they won by 3 points over an undermanned UKnow team, and in Week 2 they seemed a little better with a 13 point win over 5 Guys 1 Cup but lets keep in mind that 5 Guys 1 Cup sits at 0-2 so far this season, and are in the lower echelon of the division.

Continuing on with the list of pretenders, I’d have to include the Smash Bros., a couple of season’s ago the team had the second best regular season record in the division only to lay an egg in the playoffs. The team took a two season hiatus and returned to the league this season with hopes to contend for a championship. However the division has grown in terms of talent since, and although Gene Quiocho leads the division in scoring with 30.5 ppg, I see this team struggling to compete with the teams in the upper echelon.

So far this season there is only one team in the entire division with “hype” surrounding them and that team would be The Freshmen. A few players have been noted as saying that every week is a “bye week” meaning that every week is an easy win. The week 3 loss to UKnow seemed to put things into perspective for the team. Although the team is filled with proven championship caliber players (Washed Up, Wonton Soup) they  still have to go out and win games. It seems like they are awaiting the arrival of Johnny Earl to take this team to the next level.

The Best of the Rest

The Han$um Goonz are one of those teams that I can’t really rank with the contenders or pretenders. For the simple fact that I haven’t seen them play this season. The roster seems the same as last season, and that’s not a good thing. Teams have upgraded and if your team brings back the same team from the previous season, don’t expect to make it very far.

The same can be said for the #JETS. The #Jets tried to add a post presence but their player was just a tad…well more than a tad bit over the height limit. JoeJoe Williams still leads the team in scoring but his scoring has fallen off from the mid twenties to the mid teens. The #Jets should try to add another scorer to the team or else this will be another short season.

Make it Nasty and Primetime are two teams, that can be labeled “surprise” teams. Primetime is led by Yung Dang and Mark Davison, the guard-center combo has the potential to be one of the Divisions best when the season is all played out, Dang is a three-point threat and Davison is a monster on the boards, the rest of the team feeds off the play of these two individuals.

Make it Nasty is led by strong guard play, through 3 games the teams offense is the 3rd highest scoring in the division with 159 points, so as you may know this team can score in bunches.

Eurostep should be known as EuroSTOP, Solin Bit why do all your teams posses offensive tendencies but the defensive aspect is non-existent?  In just two games you’ve managed to give up 157 points? Eurostep will be stepping their way away from the post season if they keep up this lack luster defensive effort.

In just two games Blood and Bones has shown major inconsistencies. In their Week 1 win, this team looked solid but in Week 2 and 3 this team suffered 2 double-digit losses.

686 is the unfortunate team that’s sitting at the bottom of the division with no wins in 3 games played. The team has the worst defense in the division giving 213 points in 3 games. Things may be looking up for in Week 4 as they take on the team right above them in the standings the #JETS as both teams look for their first win.

That was a brief, yet no so brief look at all the teams in Division 2.

Cali Swag Bears vs. Wonton Soup

DIVISION 3

The Cali Swag Bears open the season, with a 64 – 51 loss to the divisions new arrival Wonton Soup. In doing so, they become the only team out of last season’s champions to lose their opening game.

Junior Muntu assisted Kinard with the scoring and finished with 10 points and 3 rebounds and  Anthony Cockrell rounded out the scoring trio with 8 points and 4 rebounds. The Swag Bears played without any of the championship swagger, and if they keep this up. Their hopes of a repeat will be dead and gone.

Bombers vs. Team YOLO!

DIVISION 3

The Bombers defeat Team YOLO! in one of the most low scoring games in the Divisions existence, 35 – 20.

The Bombers were led by Jimmy who finished with a team high (11 points and 3 rebounds) Jose Vasquez who finished with 9 points and 3 rebounds. Edgar rounded out the scoring trio, with (6 points, 3 rebounds). The Bombers found away to come out with a big win in a very low-scoring game

Darriyal Morris led Team YOLO! in the scoring column for the second consecutive week, Morris finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Josh Canaderio was second in command behind Morris, Canaderio finished with 4 points and 3 rebounds. Those were the only bright spots for this team, in this very ugly game.

LEGITimate vs. Special Delivery

DIVISION 3

After an offensive foul in the final seconds, LEGITimate turned over the ball and all hopes of winning this very close game, they fall to Special Delivery, 51 – 49.

HS Standout Gabe York suspended for playing in an IBL game

For those of you who don’t follow prep sports, this may be an interesting story for you. The story concerns Orange Lutheran stand-out  and University of Arizona signee Gabe York.

York is under investigation by his high school and the CIFSS for playing in an IBL game this past weekend.

So lo and behold it seemed to be another standard Division 1 game with Knicee taking on Cov City, nothing out of the ordinary was happening, Knicee was running away with the game and I was strutting around the gym as usual. Then a friend came up to me and said “Look that’s Gabe York right there” and pointed to a player wearing #5 in a red reversible. I replied “No it’s not! It’s against CIF rules to play in any outside league when the season is on

With my only knowledge of York being his BallisLife videos on YouTube I had to check the stat sheets for myself. I went over to the stats table and looked up and down the stat sheet, searching for Yorks name. The only York name in plain sight was Elijah and he was listed as #15.

I proceeded to scan the stat sheet once more and came across a name I was familiar with. The unnamed player was signed in as #5 with stats being recorded to his name. Yet that person was not in attendance, so I was to say the least “curious”. I went over to the teams bench to talk to a few guys who I presume to be close friends to players on the team. I took a seat next to the first person I seen, and asked “what’s #5’s name?” he responded “Oh that’s Gabe”. Coincidentally as soon as he responded I looked on the court and player #5 (York) drove to the basket with intentions to make an IBL poster, and if you’ve  seen York’s YouTube video’s you would know that’s exactly what he does, Posterize defenders.

So the speculation was indeed true.  I continued asking questions about York and what exactly he was doing playing in the game, and my source said that York  “was begging his mom to let him play so he could warm up and get his game legs back after being out of action for the last 2 weeks  following his appendectomy.

The story of Gabe’s investigation/suspension broke mid day yesterday (Monday), and all I could think was “Wow, how did these people find out so fast”.

Hence, Gabe played on Sunday in the league finishing with 27 points and 7 rebounds, in a meaningless game (for him) where the team he played for, got trounced by 23 points (94-71) and him seemingly not knowing that an obscure rule on page 111 of the CIF “Blue Book”, Section 600 says that no player can participate in an organized event while in-season.

The rule was originally designed to prevent high school basketball players from participating in an AAU exhibition or similar event in the middle of the season. However, some genius has decided that men’s league basketball that most people participate in is considered an “organized event.”

The penalty is a two-game suspension for every one game played. Sunday was the only time Gabe has ever played in a men’s league and will likely be required to serve out the two game suspension.
