Flying Squirrels take the Division 2 Championship

After 9 weeks of blowouts, heart-break, comebacks and teams going through turmoil, we had the 2 teams  playing for their respective Division Title.

#1 Double Dribble, was the only team in the L to go undefeated in the regular season with an (8-0) record, they hosted the #3 Flying Squirrels (6-1) in the IBL Division 2 Championship game. This finals match was unpredictable to say the least.

Division 2

Double Dribble led by PG and Division MVP Jesse Jimenez entered the game as leading the division in PPG (677) and  had the largest point differential in all their wins combined with (188).

While Double Dribble was busy accumulating the points and blowing their opponents to shreds, the Flying Squirrels were focusing on their defense with most of their scoring done by Aaron Sanchez (21.6 ppg) the team decided to focus on the defensive end; with their lock down defense stopping other teams from scoring was an easy task and they ended their regular season as the most defensive efficient team giving up (449 points) through 9 games.

The stage was set to be an epic battle with both teams looking to solidify themselves in IBL history with the win. From the opening tip  both teams look poised to give the crowd on hand a show, the Flying Squirrels opened the game a little cold shooting the basketball going 3-11 on their first 14 field goal attempts. Double Dribble however got out on fast breaks and shared the ball beautifully and showed us why they were the undefeated team.

The first quarter finished with both teams pretty mush even none gaining edge on the other. In the second quarter the Squirrels started converting on their offensive opportunities as Josh Johnson began his scoring barrage as he accumulated 18 points for the game. Johnson began to get the double dribble defenders in foul trouble as he constant drives to the basket caused fouls. Along with Johnson the teams leading scorer Aaron Sanchez chipped in 20 points and 9 rebounds.  The game remained close through all four quarters but bad execution  down the stretch by Double Dribble caused the game to slip away.

Double Dribble  led in scoring by Jesse Jimenez who finished with 15 points and 2 rebounds, behind Jesse his brother Jerry who finished with a double double 10 points and 10 rebounds, that however wasn’t enough to get their team over the hump to capture the title.

The #3 Flying Squirrels finish their season as the IBL Division 2 Champions, this is unfathomable to think since the Squirrels didn’t even qualify playoffs last season. However as we all know, anything can happen in the IBL.

Congratulations to Aaron Sanchez who was named Finals MVP.
